Text 23 Aug 7 notes Summer Work

I was lucky to spend 10 weeks as a News21 reporting fellow this summer. Covering the topic of ‘Aging in America’ is not the sexiest thing in the world, but I got to travel and report on stories around the US. I went to Abingdon, VA, Chicago and upstate New York. It was a great learning experience, and I got to spend it with some amazing editors and a dozen other very talented reporters. On top of that it was PAID (seems to be a rarity these days), so I made a little coin…and the three videos I contributed to, all ran in the New York Times. Summer well spent. Thanks CUnews21.

Videos below (links, not embeds. Sorry).

Elderly co-share in upstate New York between a 65 year old looking for cheap rent and an 81 year old needing a caretaker:

A group of seniors bought a bunch of land in Virginia and formed ‘ElderSpirit,’ a community they can age in together:

Text 8 Aug 2 notes Politics and Religion Bring One Hell of a Crowd

Political rallies and religious ceremonies always bring out big crowds. Combine the two, in a very busy square in the middle of Tehran, and it gets pretty intense.

In Iran, black holidays are frequent, and people mourn publicly. In late May 2009 (about two weeks before election day), people were mourning the death of Fatemeh, the prophet Mohammad’s daughter, in Vali-asr square. Ahmadinejad’s camp decided to join in.

One of the first to show up. Fairly enthusiastic.
