Politics and Religion Bring One Hell of a Crowd
Political rallies and religious ceremonies always bring out big crowds. Combine the two, in a very busy square in the middle of Tehran, and it gets pretty intense.
In Iran, black holidays are frequent, and people mourn publicly. In late May 2009 (about two weeks before election day), people were mourning the death of Fatemeh, the prophet Mohammad’s daughter, in Vali-asr square. Ahmadinejad’s camp decided to join in.
One of the first to show up. Fairly enthusiastic.
First wave of people approach Vali-asr sq.
The president is in here somewhere.
